Winter Driving Safety Tips

WINTER DRIVING SAFETY TIPS If you can avoid driving during this storm, do so. However, if you have to drive, the Red Cross offers these tips about how to drive safely during a winter storm or what to do if you become stuck in your vehicle:

•Make sure your vehicle is ready for winter with a window scraper, kitty litter or sand in case you get stuck, extra clothes and a Disaster Supplies Kit in your trunk.
Pack high-protein snacks, water, first aid kit, flashlight, small battery-operated radio, an emergency contact card with names and phone numbers, extra prescription medications, blankets and important documents or information you may need.
•Fill the vehicle’s gas tank and clean the lights and windows to help you see.
•Find out what disasters may occur where you are traveling and pay attention to the weather forecast. Before you leave, let someone know where you are going, the route you plan to take, and when you expect to get there. If your car gets stuck, help can be sent along your predetermined route.
•If you have to drive, make sure everyone has their seat belts on and give your full attention to the road. Avoid distractions such as cell phones.
•Don’t follow other vehicles too closely. Sudden stops are difficult on snowy roadways.
•Don’t use cruise control when driving in winter weather.
•Don’t pass snow plows.
•Know that ramps, bridges and overpasses will freeze before roadways.
•Don’t run your engine and heater constantly to help avoid running out of gas. Don’t use things like lights or the radio without the engine running so the battery doesn’t conk out.
•If you can, move your vehicle off the roadway. Stay with it – don’t abandon it. If you have to get out of your vehicle, use the side away from traffic

First of all, I want to thank those that could make it to work today and worked and drove home in unsafe conditions.  I appreciate your commitment and appreciated it.  Sometimes you do not see all the things behind the scenes and I know there is a group that is committed to doing what they can.

Secondly, we will be closed tomorrow.  Everybody, please take the time to spend with your families and stay warm.  We have freezing rain at my house and I imagine you all have the same.  Tonight conditions will get very treacherous and some of us could lose power.  The national weather service is predicting that there could be additional accumulation of winter precipitation tomorrow.  I will make an announcement tomorrow night as to any delays or closings for Saturday.

After referring to a partner in Laurinburg, Showcase Restoration will be closing at NOON today!  Please drive home safely!  There will be a 2 hour delay tomorrow for reporting to work.  If that changes, you will be notified by text, email or phone call.  Please remember to contact each of the employees that report to you.  We don't want to miss letting people know.

We have been notifying our customers to let them know our schedule.

All Employees:

Today we are open on an optional basis.  Basically an employee is encouraged to use prudence when reporting to work and is not expected to report to work at any time they feel it is too dangerous.  Refusal to report to work in these instances will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

 We are expecting very cold temperatures over the next few days which may result in numerous claims.  Extra on-call workers may be needed over the next few days and this weekend.  Please notify your manager if you are available for on-call work.

No decision has been made for Thursday but according to company policy the decision to close the office will be made no later than one hour prior to the first reporting time of the normally scheduled work day (8:00am).  Managers and supervisors will be responsible for contacting each of their employees.  However, employees should call the main company number 910-864-0911 to speak to the manager on-call if they do not receive a call from their direct supervision or cannot contact their manager directly.

The company policy regarding inclement weather will be followed in regards to allowing employees to use PTO or take leave without pay when the company has closed due to inclement weather or you cannot report due to transportation difficulties.  The company reserves the right to require the use of PTO if we are closed for more than one day.

Multiple Storms But Snow, Ice and Rain Lines More Difficult to Forecast in Current Pattern
Storm will cut across the mid-Atlantic on Monday. There can be a narrow strip of snow and ice over the northern Tennessee Valley Sunday night into Monday morning. We already see snow and ice in northern Texas to Oklahoma with this system. Mostly rain will fall across the southern mid-Atlantic into the Carolinas. South of the precipitation area, it will get quite mild with highs in the 70s. Chillier, but not frigid, air will be north of the track.

I keep looking at the site and seeing so many people ripping the Accuweather and the Weather Channel on their forecasts. Storms are different and they all do not follow the same path. The setup with the next series of systems is completely different. We do not have arctic air left in the East, there is an upper ridge off the Southeast coast that will play games with the track, and we are heading toward a strong negative PNA. The one thing that remains the same is the positive NAO. Storms in this setup will have a tendency to track farther north. However, it is funny how both the European and GFS have snow forecast farther south looking at the two graphics below. If you just look at the surface and upper graphics only and raw print out, I just have a hard time seeing this. It looks like all rain in the beginning, for a while, then a change to snow as the wave heads by. However, ground temperatures will be higher than the past few storms. These storms will be tough. I like the heaviest snow between the Pennsylvania border and the Pennsylvania Turnpike into central Jersey.
Keep in mind, these are six-hour intervals. There will be rain and it is forecast by the models tonight into early tomorrow for most of the northern mid-Atlantic. And then the rain will turn to snow, but how much?

A strong negative PNA will dictate the tracks on the next couple of systems, but it will be the depth of cold in front that will determine what kind of precipitation we are looking at in the interior Northeast. This storm will impact the central and southern Plains to the East Coast Tuesday into Wednesday. Snow will fall as far south as Oklahoma with significant amounts into the Midwest, western Ohio Valley and Great Lakes. In front, low-level cold air will hold as precipitation arrives, making for a mess. Snow and ice with a change over to rain closer to the track of the low and on south; it looks like a real mess. It will be warmer in the Southeast again with departures over 10 southeastern Virginia, Carolinas to northeastern Florida.

The coldest air will hold in the Rockies and Plains behind this system, but some of the cold will expand over top through the Great Lakes and Northeast, setting up the next system between the 8th and 9th. There are some differences in the models on the track and intensity but look for another system cutting northeast through the mid-Atlantic with a positive NAO and negative PNA. Another major snow event will occur from the eastern Plains to the Midwest and Great Lakes. Out in front, perhaps, more snow and ice will fall depending again on the intensity of the storm. However, with a little more cold and a farther south track of the storm, some areas in northeastern Pennsylvania to New England could wind up with 1-2 feet of snow.

Behind this system, we feel the cold will extend out from the West despite the negative look of the PNA on the CPC site. Cold will come through the 10th to 15th in two waves. Any warmth is suppressed. Even the Gulf Coast may cool down to near or slightly below normal departures. This will be a short period in the pattern. Even the Southeast, there is a risk of freeze in northern parts Florida especially, but there is a slight chance in central Florida. Still, I do not anticipate any significant damage to citrus crops or vegetables.
